It is an informal, friendly and informative meeting (at an outdoor public Auckland location), and not a teaching workshop. I will be doing some demonstration of different techniques as well as a general talk about Salto del Pastor.
This event is a great opportunity to see what Salto del Pastor Canario offers, prior to attending a workshop.

Winstones Cove, Torbay, North Shore, Auckland.

Frequently asked Questions:
What are the levels of ability?
I have divided the levels of practice into three categories, depending on amount of skill and risk involved.
Level 1: This is the safest. It consists of learning the basic techniques, landing on a soft flat surface (the sand of the beach, in our case), and attempting small jumps. This is the level of the workshops and regular lessons.
Level 2: This includes practising Salto del Pastor on a variety of diverse terrains during tramping, with the choice of low to medium skill challenges, but with the possibility of opting to follow a tramping route instead at anytime if preferred. This level allows Saltadores to experience Salto del Pastor while hiking through scenic routes. It is the most popular, enjoyable and recreational way to practise it and I would like to offer it once we have a group with enough experience and skill.
Level 3: This is the most advanced level and may involve risky situations. This level is out of the scope of any of the workshops, sessions or tramps I am planning to organize.
How old is the Salto del Pastor Canario?
The Spanish arrived to the Canaries about 600 years ago. The aborigines of the Canaries were already practicing it.
Is it safe?
It is like driving a car - in that responsibility, awareness, and common sense are very important. The most important rule of all is not to be competitive and to know your own limits.
Where is it practiced?
New Zealand’s geography is very different from the Canary Islands. Back there, we practise in the mountains. In NZ we will learn locally, and maybe organise a group trip to the mountains as skill levels grow.
What level of fitness is required?
It depends. The “lanza” (the pole) that we practise with, is a tool to enable us to move more efficiently and safely in certain environments. It is a very technical sport modality. Some of the techniques require a normal level of fitness, others may require anything up to a professional athlete condition. In these workshops, we will only approach the most basic techniques (requiring average level of fitness), which are nevertheless, the most useful and important techniques of all.
Weather conditions?
It needs to be dry. It is not safe with rain.
Why limited number of participants?
Each workshop will have no more than 4 participants to allow correct supervision and safety, as well as to ensure each person receives individual tuition.
Are there any workshop dates yet?
Yes, there are. I am organizing several workshops dates this Summer (Jan, Feb, Mar 2021), depending on number of people wishing to attend.
