Salto del Pastor Canario

The Shepherd's Leap or "Salto del Pastor Canario"

Salto Del pastor (English: the Shepherd's Leap) also called Canarian Jumping is a spectacular tradition practiced throughout the Canary Islands. Its origins  date back to the Guanches, the aboriginal inhabitants of the islands prior to the Spanish conquest period of the early 1400s. Due to the local geography of the Canaries, Shepherds required a specialized means of transporting themselves safely across ravines and down steep embankments, and settled on the use of long wooden poles with metal points known as lanza. Salto del Pastor practitioners have developed a wide range of techniques to facilitate quick and agile movement across difficult terrain.
